The Inca Pachacuteq consolidated this sacred and central temple during the 15th century. After the Spanish conquest, the first thing the Spaniards did upon arriving at Qorikancha was to remove the gold plates that covered the walls.

This temple stands out for its deep meaning and the unique blend of Inca and colonial architecture, allowing visitors to feel as if they are traveling through time.

Religious function:

The Qorikancha was the main center of worship of the Inca State. This sacred site gained fame for its opulence and served as the ritual heart of the Tahuantinsuyo, hosting important offerings and the famous Inti Raymi festival. A fascinating aspect for visitors is its dual nature: besides honoring gods such as the Thunder God and the Moon, the temple also functioned as a precise astronomical observatory, showcasing the advanced scientific knowledge of the Inca civilization.

The heart of a complex imaginary lines center: Ceque System

Qorikancha was the array of this amazing complex system of imaginary lines, The Ceque System was not only a system part of a state, was part of a complex ritual system, from this significant site, a system of imaginary lines pointed to every sacred site in the Inca State (Wakas, temples, house priest, and Incas palace)
This system not only helped maintain order within the state; during the Qapaq Qocha festivity, it also ensured that people distributed offerings equally, taking into account the importance of each temple.

Important note: During the Qapaq Cocha celebration, people presented various types of offerings, including textiles, ceremonial pottery, plants such as coca leaves, flowers, and llama blood (they distributed this blood to the sacred wakas following the lines of the Ceque system), as well as human sacrifices. In many cases, Inca religious authorities selected children between 8 and 15 years old for these rituals. The entire Tahuantinsuyo provided offerings.
In total there were approximately 328 imaginary lines born from the Qorikancha pointing to the sacred sites.

Beyond all the importance of ritually talking, the Qorikancha was the witness to the looting of the gold and the fall of a great empire. Once the Spanish arrived, the conquistadors took over the temple to build the Dominican churches (still in function nowadays), since the order arrived alongside the conquistadors. Francisco Pizarro’s brother, Juan Pizarro, donated this site to the Dominicans on November 23, 1538, including the Temple of the Sun. The recipient of this donation was Fray Vicente de Valverde: this aided in evangelization and the eradication of idolatry by building churches at every sacred site or place of worship.

The Astronomical Clock

Beyond its religious significance, Qorikancha served as the scientific center of the Inca world, and its design allowed for:

Alignment with the solstices: The temple’s walls align perfectly to capture the first rays of the sun during the June and December solstices.
Calendar control: A vital tool for organizing agricultural campaigns and sacred festivals.
Study of the Sun: The precise orientation of its niches and windows allowed the Incas to track the sun’s path throughout the years.

Engineering and Architecture

The Incas had a wide experience about the masonry; the Inca engineering was not merely a matter of aesthetic, but one of the most advanced engineering feats of the time, the masons of Tahuantinsuyo developed a natural earthquake-resistant. The secret to their longevity lies in their seismic resilience. While colonial structures, made rigid by the use of the mortar, collapsed under the force of the Andes, Inca walls learned to ‘’dance’’ thanks to their inclination and the perfect fit of their fine masonry, the stones move with the earthquake and return to their exact place once the movement stops. It is an architecture that does not fight against nature. but flows with it.

Archaeological Evidence

The research has identified:

– Drainage channels and hydraulic systems
– Remains Inca Pottery
– Evidence of ritual activities
– Overlapping pre-Inca and Inca structures.

You might wonder how the Incas managed to achieve such an advanced level of engineering and astronomy, they had skills to survive and build big works. If you are thinking of visiting Perú or you’re already here, don’t forget to visit this historical and iconic site.It should definitely be on your list of places to see.

In the middle of Cusco, it is located in a place where it has not stood still…it simply beats differently.
